Arafatul Islam selected for the Panos fellowship on PRS and B-PRSP

Arafatul Islam, a Journalist of Bangladesh selected for the Panos fellowship on the PRS (Poverty Reduction Strategy) and B-PRSP. Panos Bangladesh providing these fellowships to 12 selected Journalists. There was a contract signing and primary introduction held 23 March 2007 in Panos Bangladesh office.

All fellows will attend a 2-day training workshop on PRS and B-PRSP which will hold from 6 to 7 April, 2007. After that, fellows will do research on PRSP related issues and publish at least three reports/features within April to June 2007. According to Panos Country representative S. M. Mayeen Ahmed, ‘In order to select the fellows from a number of competent applicants, we reviewed- the submitted work and the performance in the interview, and the affiliation with the national media and the participation in former PANOS award scheme on 'PRS and B-PRSP' of district based journalists’.

Arafatul Islam started his career in Journalism from 2002. During this period, he has visited several countries for Reporting and training purpose. Now he is working for the weekly Shaptahik 2000 (www.shaptahik2000.info) as a Staff Reporter and monthly Technology Today as an assistant Editor. He wants to continue his career on this profession.

In May 2006, Arafatul Islam established an online discussion group named "Voice of South" for South Asian journalists, policy makers and civil society organizations. Over six hundred members of this group actively share their views and opinions on current events happening in South Asia. The web portal for this group named www.voiceofsouth.org is in under construction.

PANOS South Asia has its headquarters in Katmandu (Nepal) with country offices in New Delhi (India), Colombo (Sri Lanka), Karachi (Pakistan), and Dhaka (Bangladesh). The Bangladesh office opened in 2005.

Hasibur Rahman bilu (Bogra, Daily Star), Rokib Uddin Pannu (Khulna, Sangbad), Shah Alam Bhuiyan (Nandail, Ittefaq), Tapos Kanti Das (Khulna, New Age) and A H M Abdul Hai (Rajshahi- Upachar, BTV, Guardian).
